Pearl, Garnet and Cubic Zirconia Earrings

24 x 10 mm hoop earrings crafted in rhodium-plated 925 sterling silver with a 10 x 7 mm cultured pearl and 6 and 3 mm faceted garnets. The design features a 6 mm heart-cut garnet surrounded by cubic zirconia, from which the pearl hangs gracefully, separated by a 3 mm garnet. The closure is a post and wing clasp.

Pearls are produced by saltwater bivalves (mostly of the genus Pinctata), some freshwater bivalves, and occasionally some gastropods. Pearls result from a reaction that occurs when foreign bodies penetrate between the shell and the mantle of the bivalve or gastropod, or even penetrate the mantle itself. The epithelium forms the shell through nacreous secretions, but it also coats any foreign bodies that lodge in this area.

In Europe, pearls were an exclusive privilege of rulers. It is believed that the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus was the first to successfully cultivate perfectly rounded pearls in freshwater mollusks in 1761.
