Malachite pendant

This 60 x 32 mm pendant is handcrafted in high-purity 950 silver. The centerpiece is a polished malachite cabochon, 32 x 23 mm, cut in a teardrop shape. Malachite's exceptional emerald-green color is due to the presence of copper in its composition. Exquisite concentric bands of light and dark are visible within the stone. Three hand-carved silver leaves complete the design.

The importation of this carbonate as a mineral is due to the high presence or abundance of copper within the gem. The name given to this mineral comes from the Greeks; their word referred solely to the color of the rock itself, not the gem. In the Middle Ages, malachite was believed to relieve menstrual pain and facilitate childbirth, which is why it is currently known as the midwife's stone.
