Iolite and Sapphire Ring

Size 20 ring crafted in rhodium-plated 925 sterling silver, featuring hand-faceted iolite and colored sapphires. The ring comprises nine iolite stones, each 7 x 5 mm, with a beautiful violet/blue hue characteristic of this gemstone, arranged in a diamond pattern. The iolite stones are framed by small, 2 mm colored sapphires.

You may occasionally hear this gem called a "water sapphire," but this terminology is prohibited and should not be used to describe iolite. Legend has it that the Vikings used this stone as a polarizing filter; that is, they used sheets of this mineral to determine the sun's position on cloudy days and thus navigate safely home.

Sapphire:

The elements that give it color are iron and titanium in blue sapphire, and vanadium in violet. In antiquity, and to some extent even into the Middle Ages, the term sapphire was generally understood to refer to what is now known as lapis lazuli.
