Octahedral Fluorite on a Quartz Point

Fluorite of octahedral formation, aqua green in color and with perfect crystallization, on a white quartz matrix, terminating in a point. Its weight is 207 grams and its size is 140 x 40 x 40 mm.

It is a mineral that exhibits the physical properties of thermoluminescence and fluorescence (under ultraviolet light).³ In industry, fluorite is primarily used as a flux in iron and steel metallurgy. It is also used as a source of fluorine and hydrofluoric acid, in ceramic glazing, and in the manufacture of some types of optical glass.

The origin of fluorite's color has been debated for at least 200 years. A factor complicating this discussion is that, in many cases, similar colors have different origins. In general, fluorite's color is determined by its rare-earth element content, combined with the effects of ionizing radiation and the thermal history of the specimens.
