Iolite Ring

Size 15 ring, handmade in high-purity 950 silver. The star of this piece is a 6mm faceted iolite with a round design. Its marvelous blue-violet color makes it an unmistakable gem. The stone is secured with prongs and set on a delicate silver band. The entire ring has been brushed, giving it a silky finish that beautifully complements the iolite's brilliance.

You may occasionally hear this gem called a "water sapphire," but this terminology is prohibited and should not be used to describe iolite. Legend has it that the Vikings used this stone as a polarizing filter; that is, they used sheets of this mineral to determine the sun's position on cloudy days and thus navigate safely home.
