It was widely used by the church during the Middle Ages and became a favoured stone of the Baroque period; the ancient Egyptians were already extracting it as both gem and healing stone two thousand years before Christ, when it was also known as chrysolite. Sourced in Brazil and traditionally linked to Libra, it is regarded as a natural stone that helps one live one's own life and gather wisdom. The Egyptians called it the gem of the sun and believed that stones found at night shone with a light of their own, so their miners marked the deposits by day and returned to collect them afterwards.
