Malachite azurite is a very rare basic copper carbonate, which originates from rainwater containing carbonic acid in the oxidation zone of copper mines.

In the Middle Ages, malachite was believed to relieve menstrual pain and facilitate childbirth, which is why it is now known as the midwife's stone.
