The Star Ruby is one of the rarest and most spectacular gems in the world: it displays the optical phenomenon of asterism, forming a six-pointed star that appears to float and shift across the stone’s surface under direct light. This effect is produced by rutile inclusions oriented along three directions.

Like every ruby, it measures 9 on the Mohs hardness scale — the second-hardest gem after diamond. The finest examples come from Burma (Myanmar) and Sri Lanka.
