Lapis Lazuli Pendant

This 70 x 33 mm pendant is handcrafted in high-purity 950 silver. The centerpiece is a large, polished, teardrop-shaped cabochon of lapis lazuli, measuring 46 x 30 mm, in an exquisite blue hue. Within the lapis lazuli, tiny golden flecks of pyrite are visible. The design is completed with silver trim around the edge.

The term lapis lazuli comes from the Latin word "lapis," meaning stone, and "lazuli," an Arabic word (allazjward) meaning paradise, sky, or simply blue. In the Middle Ages, it was also used as a dye for ultramarine. It was ground into powder to produce the intense blue color, and Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, and Fra Angelico all referred to it as blue gold, as it commanded a similar price.
