Rutilated Quartz:

Rutilated quartz is simply quartz whose interior has been "pierced" by inclusions of rutile, a needle-like mineral ranging in color from brown to reddish, composed of titanium oxide. These needles appear within the quartz as a luminous, bright golden color. It was once considered to represent sunlight captured by the stone and was believed to bring light to those experiencing gloomy moods.

Tourmalinated Quartz:

According to Celtic oral tradition, quartz crystals were believed to be the fangs of dragons and therefore guardians of ancestral wisdom, the rhythms of nature, and environmental richness. Nero had two cups carved from quartz to drink from on celebratory occasions, as he believed it was a symbol of divine favor. Pliny supported the idea that quartz was a frozen chemical and that it came from the coldest regions of the Alps.

The greatest admirer of tourmalines was Empress Dowager Cixi, who ruled China from 1860 to 1908. She used the stone in carvings, on watch chain clasps, and on the buttons of jackets worn by the Imperial Court and other important figures. The Empress now rests on a tourmaline cushion.
