This 41 x 33 mm pendant is crafted from rhodium-plated 925 sterling silver and features a polished 33 mm diameter pallasite crystal, encased in liquid sapphire for added protection. The design is simple, allowing the meteorite itself to speak for itself. This piece is for connoisseurs.
Pallasites are a rare type of meteorite.
The material that makes up pallasites is usually formed by centimeter-sized crystals of high-purity olivine (with the gem quality of peridot ) in an iron-nickel matrix.
Pallasites were initially thought to originate at the boundary between the mantle and core of differentiated asteroids , which were subsequently fractured by successive impacts. A more recent alternative hypothesis is that they are generated by impacts that directly mix core and mantle materials.
In reality, its name is a tribute to the German naturalist Peter Pallas (1741–1811), who in 1772 studied the first specimen, found near Krasnoyarsk (in the Siberian mountains), weighing 680 kilograms. The mass described by Pallas in 1776 was one of the examples used by Chladni in the 1790s to demonstrate the reality of meteorite impacts on Earth, which at the time were considered by most scientists to be folklore.
