Rutilated quartz is simply quartz whose interior has been "pierced" by inclusions of rutile, a needle-like mineral ranging in color from brown to reddish, composed of titanium oxide. These needles appear within the quartz as a luminous, bright gold. It was considered to represent sunlight captured by the stone and was believed to bring light to those experiencing gloomy moods.
