Aquamarine is the pale blue-green variety of beryl, similar to emerald. It is a highly prized gemstone in jewelry due to its hardness, which allows for a wide variety of cuts. Its color and brilliance are reminiscent of seawater. The blue hue of aquamarine is due to the presence of Fe2+, while the greenish tint is due to Fe3+ inclusions and can be removed with a gentle heat treatment.
